DESIGNER FOR MEN WOMEN IN L.A. STREET

STAMPD
Founded: Los Angeles, 2009

Designer: Chris Stamp

The aesthetic in one sentence: What you'd wear to a kickball game at Art Basel.

For a while now, athletic aesthetic have picked up steam in the fashion world. It started with varsity jackets, and now we've got everything from baseball jerseys to football shirts that let you rep your own squad. Four years ago, Chris Stamp started his label with footwear in mind. Since then, Stampd has evolved into a full-on lifestyle label that's championed the point where streetwear, high fashion, and luxury goods meet. While the clothes take plenty of inspiration from sports staples, it'd be remiss to simply call Stampd a fashion line. It seems to really be more about selling every possible thing their guy could need—whether it's an all-black brogue creeper shoe, a folding knife with snakeskin details, surf wax, or just a cool hat.

SKINGRAFT

Founded: Los Angeles, 2006
Designer: Jonny Cota

The aesthetic in one sentence: Fashionable bon vivants with a penchant for black metal.

Skingraft designer Jonny Cota's resume includes a gig as a stilt walker and costume designer in the circus. He certainly doesn't clown around when it comes to fashion design. Inspired by music and its associated subcultures, there's a definite hard rock edge to his look, with bits and pieces of grunge and punk—which makes it ideal for new hip-hop artists who appreciate clothes that mix dark, drapey gothic silhouettes. Skinhead staples like bomber jackets are cut a bit fuller to play against the proportions of slimmer drop-crotch pants and elongated T-shirts. It's a look that certainly isn't for every guy, but much like black metal, it has its staunch supporters.

MATTISON
Founded: Los Angeles, 2012

Designer: Derek Mattison

The aesthetic in one sentence: Dressed close enough to the nines without looking fussy.

When he graduated from Michigan State business school, Derek Mattison's aspiration was to be an Internet entrepreneur, not a menswear designer. However, the style-conscious tech marketer couldn't find taillored gear to match his refined tastes, so he decided to start a label for guys looking for suits with super-skinny details. Mattison became famous for jackets with 1-inch collar rolls, small chest pockets, thin collars, and complemeting skinny ties. It's a look that combines the put-togetherness of a suit with a laid back minimal vibe. His painstaking attention to tailoring and unique silhouette paid off—Mattison opened up his first shop in Los Angeles last year.
